Utilities: when to run them, how to spend less

Most homes pay more for the same electricity simply because of the hour it was used. Shift the heavy jobs out of the peak window, tidy up a handful of habits, and the bill drops without anyone living less comfortably.

Summer: avoid 3pm–8pm

Late afternoon is when air conditioning peaks across the grid, so that block is the most expensive on almost every time-of-use plan. Run heavy appliances before noon or after 8pm.

Winter: avoid 6am–9am and 5pm–8pm

Winter demand has two humps — the morning wake-up and the evening return home. Heat, showers and cooking all land at once. Shift laundry and dishes to mid-morning or late night.

Cheapest window: 10pm–6am

Overnight is the lowest-demand block year round, and on most time-of-use plans it is the off-peak rate. Weekends and holidays are usually off-peak all day.

Check your own plan first

Peak hours and rates are set by your utility, not by a national rule. Pull up your last bill or your provider's rate page and write the exact peak window on the fridge before you rearrange anything.

Where the savings actually come from

Laundry

Wash on cold — heating water is most of the cost of a load. Run full loads only, clean the lint trap every time, and start the dryer straight after a previous load while the drum is still warm.

Cold washes cut most of a load's energy use

Dishwasher

Scrape instead of pre-rinsing, run it full, and use the delay-start button to fire at 11pm. Skip heated dry and crack the door instead — the dishes finish themselves.

Heated dry is often the single biggest draw in the cycle

Heating & cooling

This is usually the largest line on the bill. Set back 7–10°F for the eight hours you're asleep or out, keep filters clean, and close blinds on the sun side in summer.

A consistent setback schedule is the highest-value change in the house

Water heater

Drop the tank to 120°F, insulate the first few feet of hot pipe, and cut shower time by two minutes each. If the tank has a timer or vacation mode, use it when you travel.

Every 10°F lower reduces standby heat loss

Standby draw

TVs, consoles, chargers and coffee makers pull power doing nothing. Group them on one switched strip you can kill at night, and unplug the second fridge in the garage if it holds three cans.

Always-on devices quietly run all month

Lighting & small habits

Swap the five bulbs you actually use for LEDs first, wash with cold, cook with the microwave or air fryer in summer instead of the oven, and run ceiling fans counter-clockwise.

LEDs use a fraction of an incandescent's power for the same light

Five calls and clicks worth making

Work the bill, not just the house

  1. 1.Find your rate plan name on the bill, then look up its peak hours and price per kWh.
  2. 2.Ask your provider whether a time-of-use or budget-billing plan fits your household better — switching is usually free.
  3. 3.Ask about low-income, weatherization and rebate programs; most utilities run them and almost nobody applies.
  4. 4.Check for a free home energy audit — many providers send someone out and hand you the fixes.
  5. 5.Compare this month against the same month last year, not against last month. Weather makes month-to-month useless.

Peak windows, rates and programs are set by your own utility and vary by region and season. Treat the hours above as a starting point and confirm them on your bill before you rebuild your week around them.
