Holiday Spending Plan

Holiday spending is easier to control when you set the number before the season starts.

Why the number comes first

Most holiday overspending happens one reasonable purchase at a time. Picking a total before the first sale email arrives gives every later choice a limit to check against.

Start with what you can pay in cash by the end of December without touching bills or emergency savings. That figure is your holiday budget, even if it's smaller than last year.

Plan the whole season, not just gifts

Groceries for gatherings, gas for visits, postage, teacher gifts and decorations often cost as much as the presents. Give each its own line on the plan.

Leave a small cushion line for surprises so one forgotten gift doesn't break the plan.

How to use it

  1. Decide your total holiday budget first, then split it by person.
  2. Include food, travel, decorations and wrapping, not just gifts.
  3. Track each purchase as you go instead of adding it up in January.
  4. Agree on limits with family early so nobody feels awkward.

Set the number before the season starts, then hold the line.
